An increased capacity to concentrate is a surprising benefit for those who use hearing aids, according to a University of Maryland study, which demonstrated that hearing aids enhanced working memory and auditory brain function.
Despite these benefits, the Hearing Loss Association of America reports that 48 million Americans with a hearing loss wait seven years before seeking help.
There are numerous reasons why people with a hearing loss put off seeking help, but the cost of treatment and lack of financial assistance from insurance companies are near the top of the list.
So, I’m excited to announce that the School Employees Benefits Board (SEBB) in Washington has established a program for providing free or low-cost hearing care to school district staff in the Lacey community with Regence/Uniform Medical Plan (UMP).
The School Employees Benefits Board Program
Those covered include school district staff ages 21 or over as of January 1, 2019, who are enrolled in participating insurance programs through the district.
How The Program Works For Regence/UMP Plan Participants
Patients may have to pay standard rates for each routine hearing exam per calendar year.
However, if test results indicate that hearing aids are a medical necessity, participants will pay $0 for the purchase of a single hearing aid or instrument set for both ears every five calendar years, which includes:
✔ Earmold(s)
✔ Hearing aid instruments
✔ Batteries, cords, and other ancillary equipment (external components of cochlear implants and bone-anchored hearing aid devices) included in the initial purchase
✔ Warranties included in the initial purchase.
✔ A follow-up consultation within 30 days after hearing aid fitting
✔ 30 days of rental charges if you rent a hearing aid before an actual purchase
✔ Hearing aid equipment maintenance and repair
The Regence/UMP program does not cover:
✘ Charges incurred under expired plan
✘ Warranties not included in the initial purchase of the hearing aid(s) or extended warranties
✘ Replacement batteries or other ancillary equipment after the initial hearing aid purchase
Regence/UMP partners with Amplifon, Tru-Hearing, and Beltone brand hearing aids, providing special discounts for plan members even if they are not eligible for the benefits specified by the SEBB program.

The ongoing cognitive damage associated with untreated hearing loss can be avoided through early detection and treatment, allowing you to enjoy an enhanced quality of life.
I want to ensure that those with hearing challenges receive the help they need without waiting, and the SEBB program coupled with Regence/UMP coverage makes it easier than ever to do so at low to no cost.
Bear in mind that the SEBB plan is not one-size-fits-all, so I encourage you to ask our insurance specialist to check on your coverage for you.
